Location

The farm nestles on the North eastern side of Dartmoor and just 5 minutes by car or a 30 minute walk from open moorland where people are a sparse commodity, you are choosing to visit an area which it is not difficult to find yourself a quiet place to just let the modern world pass you by.
You are more likely to hear a dog bark than constant noise from roads or other people.
Our farm is home to cattle, sheep and ponies as well as our own dogs and cats, not to mention fauna and flora unique to Dartmoor and the southwest. Plenty of time can be spent just bird watching or simply counting all the different types of flowers found growing on the sides of roads or on hedges.
The farm is a Dartmoor smallholding and although only 50 acres in size allows quiet contemplation whilst surrounded by not much else but green landscapes.
The only way to our farm is via small country lanes which provide an ever changing view around each corner and a relaxed atmosphere throughout your stay.
Each gateway provides an opportunity to take in a vista that in most cases in just plain beautiful and in some cases simply stunning.
Local area.
Throwleigh is probably one of the quietest villages in Devon and although now lacking in the modern day convenience shop the charm of the houses and winding tree lined roads make up for that.
Chagford is our local town and provides for almost everything a holiday maker is looking for.
Top class butcher, delicatessen and eatery's ensure you can get whatever you desire and there is even an extremely good vegetarian establishment which can rival the best.
Cafes and restaurants abound from casual pop in for coffee and cake and of course a natter...to a 2* Michelin restaurant at Gidleigh Park. You have no excuse not to enjoy an outstanding meal or indeed even a takeaway to bring back to the cottage to enjoy.
Shopping in Chagford is a treat with something for everyone and where local take home gifts are a certain to be found.
Slightly further afield is Moretonhampstead and Okehampton for supermarkets should you require them ranging from Lidls to Waitrose, and should that not be enough then the county town of Exeter offers everything a modern city should.
Walking, cycling or travelling by car you can discover many different locations and attractions within a relatively short distance.
Walking can take you along many footpaths and very narrow lanes to the open moor where you can walk to your heart’s content striding out across acres of open moorland and reaching a bronze age stone circle situated above the river Teign, a clapper bridge and Tolmen stone, standing here you really are standing in a place where time has stood still...and that is our backyard!!
Cycling can find you further afield for castles, hill forts and stunning hidden valley views that most people just simply speed past without a chance to see.
Driving however can take you to prehistoric and abandoned medieval villages, properties of significant national importance as well the finest coastal path in the UK.
We have it all here..except for mountains.

OUR FARM

Langstone, a traditional Dartmoor smallholding, is part of the parish of Throwleigh being mentioned in the doomsday book. The property has a family history dating back beyond 200 years, but the dwellings here go back a lot further in history.
It really has been here a long time.
The farm is approx 50 acres in size and although we have no stock of our own the land is still grazed by South Devon cattle, varying sheep breeds and traditional Dartmoor ponies to maintain the fields in the yearly cycle of farming life.
We also place great emphasis on nature with our hedges being managed and not just simply cut for tidy convenience. This allows different levels of environment for a wide range of wildlife.
We also are planning a wild flower meadow and new orchard at the centre of our farm in order to help the flowers to proliferate and supply the insect population.
Although we currently do not have our own poultry we do have our own dogs and cats and for those of you interested in them there is always a conversation to be had or a cuddle..and they do love their cuddles.
Three Hares cottage is situated on a track away from the only nearby country lane and yet is only about 10 minutes from the A30 dual carriageway and only 30 minutes from the county city of Exeter with its vibrant cosmopolitan feel.
The cottage has 2 bedrooms, one having its own woodburner and seating area, whilst both have comfortable king size double beds and have been decorated in a relaxing theme of country style and a hint of modern chic. Whilst the living room with its log burner and cosy windows is perfectly suited to those few wet or cold days we get here or an evening in with a film and a bottle of wine.
The cottage has wi-fi for the personal use of the customer.
Whatever the weather the kitchen has been set out for ease of use with the mod cons visitors expect and the ability to produce any level of meal desired, especially if you have chosen the top quality ingredients available from our local producers and suppliers.
The cottage possesses a walk-in rainfall shower to provide the best start to day or ease the muscles after a lengthy moor walk.
Parking is on site and the owners front garden possesses a table and chairs for a relaxing Al fresco meal, coffee and cake or yet another glass of wine.
This really is a cottage with almost everything a hideaway needs.

Things To do

What you do is entirely up to you but the following suggestions are just to get you in the mood.
- Walking, cycling or relaxing.
- Fishing, river or sea.
- Historic houses, castles and gardens.
- Stargazing or Nature watching.

There is simply lots to do on Dartmoor and if you desire something new or different each day of your stay then this can be found fairly easily.
However if you have come to Three Hares cottage to kick back and do nothing then we have this covered as well.
You might want to simply take in the Flora and Fauna of the area and the owners are more than happy to show you round the traditional Dartmoor smallholding to some of the spots on the farm that very few ever get to see.
Alternatively we have some of the darkest skies in Southern Britain and you might want to take advantage by bringing your own telescope if you have one.
If not the owners have a modest one and can show you a few stunning views from the orchard garden and might even provide an outdoor fire to warm yourself by..

THE THREE HARES

The image of the Three Hares is an ancient and international symbol which stretches across the globe from China along the Silk route right through ancient Persia and on into Europe with many examples even here on Dartmoor.
The image of the Three Hares which appears to show them running behind each other each with two ears, but at the same time sharing an ear with the hare in front and behind at the same time !!
This image has featured right across the globe in many differing religions and today is subject to great investigations by a local team of people some of which live only a short distance from this cottage.
Although our cottage bears only the name and has no historical connection to this motif we have chosen to name the cottage after this intriguing image to show respect for the hard work this team of people have undertaken in order to bring this fascinating subject to life in our modern world and the local history connections to such a global icon.
We are happy to explain more to those of you who are interested.
